Building Science

The Shack Built Process

Phase 1: Consultation

We are a team of Kansas City contractors that begins our process with an on-site consultation to review your project, and examine your project goals, budget, and vision. We discuss how we can make your vision become a reality, and brainstorm ideas on how to make the most of your project. After that, we’ll discuss the next steps for your project.

Phase 2: Design & Pre-Construction

We’ll analyze the details of your project, and determine the scope of work and timeline for your project. This step in the process usually takes 4-5 weeks for smaller projects, but can take up to 6 months or longer for larger projects. Because of the length of time this can take, we have our own separate agreement for this part of our process.

Phase 3: The Building Process

Once design and pre-construction have been completed, we acquire all necessary building materials and permits. We ask you to sign up for our construction management software, so you can constantly stay in contact with your project manager and tradespeople, and to stay updated on your project milestones. Once your project is finished, we’ll walk through with you, make any final adjustments as needed, and then begin our 1-year warranty.

Project Types

The difference between a functional makeover and a visual update.

Functional Makeover projects typically require extensive design services which frequently include architecture and structural engineering. Usually walls are moving around and rooms are changing function. This will also include cosmetic choices as necessary, like tile, cabinetry, trim, flooring, fixtures, and more. This level includes 3D renderings of your build along with architectural and engineering blueprints needed to acquire building permits.

Visual Update projects are for builds that have little to no structural changes and no moving parts to an already existing space. The most structural work we would do for this project level would be removing a wall, but a typical project would be a simple bathroom or kitchen update to add new cabinetry without moving appliances or layout, new counters, tile, and flooring, along with cosmetic choices like trim, fixtures, and more. This level includes 3D renderings of your project, along with engineering blueprints if they are needed for building permits.
