“There’s always a better way.”
Derick started in the construction industry when he entered a construction trades program in high school at 17 years old. After serving four years in the Army, he took time to pursue an education. He worked four years as a project manager, learning under a good friend how to instill quality into every aspect of a project.
He completed his general education at Johnson County Community College before pursuing an environmental science degree at KU. He took advantage of an opportunity to study in Germany and broadened his understanding of how construction could work here at home. Once he finished his education, he decided to create Shack Built: a company striving to be one of the best contractors in Kansas City that embodies the integrity, quality, and communication that Derick instills into every aspect of his life.
When he’s not working, Derick enjoys spending time with his wife, Shelley, and two children, Annika and Josh. They enjoy all things outdoors from mountain and gravel biking, to hiking and kayaking. You can usually find them outside year round.
