Our Story

At 17 years old, Derick Shackelford entered a construction trades program and has been immersed in the industry since. Starting out in new construction after graduating high school, Derick was able to experience the good, the bad, and the ugly of the construction industry.

After serving in the Army for 4 years, Derick decided to go back into construction, but this time, he went into residential remodeling. Derick enjoyed the work of remodeling, and he enjoyed the relationships he built while doing the work he loved. He decided to go back to school, and in 2013, he founded Shack Built to work on a few side projects.

He never imagined that creating a construction business based on the honesty and integrity that inspired him would become so popular. As Shack Built grew to become the premier contractor for home remodeling Kansas City properties, home owners in turn came to trust the reputation they strived to earn.

Now, Derick and the rest of us on the Shack Built team are happy to bring those values to our clients for every job we do. We love creating amazing and customized builds that our clients can call their home. Our passion and attention to detail has won us the Remodeler of the Year (REMY) award for multiple years, and the Best of Houzz Service for three years in a row!
